Company Profile

Spirit Airlines is an American airline that is famous for its extremely low-cost flights all throughout the United States of America. Based in Miramar, Florida, right in the heart of the metropolitan area of Miami, the airline maintains several bases situated in Detroit, Michigan and Fort Lauderdale. Aside from that, the airline also maintains its focus city, Atlantic City, New Jersey. More than half of Spirit Airlines’ flights are geared towards the exotic places of the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and all over Latin America.

Company History

When Spirit Airlines was founded back in 1980, as Charter One, the main goal of the charter tour operator was to provide travel packages to several entertainment destinations. These included the Bahamas, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City. In 1990, Charter One started providing scheduled services from Providence in Rhode Island and Boston to Atlantic City. Two years later, the airline purchased jet equipment, thus renaming the company to ‘Spirit Airlines’. Soon after, the airline’s service from Detroit, Michigan to Atlantic City in New Jersey was inaugurated.

A year later, the airline expanded its operations by operating scheduled services to Florida. Over the next 5 years, Spirit Airlines expanded so fast, increasing its scheduled services and operations from Detroit and adding more operations in several new markets, including those in Los Angeles, New York, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Spirit Airlines relocated its base to Miramar, Florida in December 1999. More expansion plans started pushing through, including services to San Juan, Puerto Rico. And from then on, the airline company’s reputation became stronger.

Spirit Airlines Destinations

Currently, the airline flies to approximately 44 destinations – all throughout the United States, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Bases at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are maintained well.
