Overview
Since 1989 when the Berlin wall was broken, the city has since been restored as the cultural and political capital of the reunified Germany. Berlin has become once again an exciting, lively and vibrant city offering visitors a lot including great opera houses, over 170 museums, more than 150 theaters as well as an excellent variety of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The city has maintained its history awe whilst it is being transformed into a more cosmopolitan and dynamic city. Berlin has created an intoxicating mix of both old and the new. The city is renowned as one of the greenest European cities having nearly 40% of parklands, rivers, lakes and woods. The city is made of 180 kilometers of rivers and canals with a criss-cross of waterways. Its bridges are more in number than in Venice. The city’s Museum Island is very unique; it consists of an ensemble of museums which has a collection of various art and subjects of interests. The palaces and parks of Potsdam make up the world heritage sites of UNESCO. The city parades a variety of events suitable for people of various ages and tastes. The summer events happen out doors.

Climate
It is a typical continental climate which is characteristic of the North Eastern European climate having warm summers of an average temperature of 18 degrees Celsius. The cold winter can be as low as -1 degrees Celsius on average. Berlin is not often given to extreme weather except for the odd very hot or very cold hot day.

When to Travel
The tourist season to Berlin is typically from the month of May till September. At these times, the weather is mostly reliable but the city is quite exiting to visit through out the year. Generally speaking, the summer months are a pleasant time to tour Berlin however it is also the busiest time as much of the city’s entertainment activities take place outdoors. The queues are shorter in the winter. Visiting Berlin is best from late spring till the beginning of autumn. However it is most ideal between May and June and in September and October. There is frequent snow and rain during winter.
Getting Around
There are great free street maps that are available in tourist offices, large hotels and car hire offices. The public transport allows movement through ferries, buses, trams and trains. The transportation system is divided into three zones of A, B and C.
