Overview

Colombia? Not the first country that comes to mind when you think of a vacation. Right? Long considered the “terrorism hotspot” of the world due to civil violence, drug trafficking and gorilla movements, it has been wrongly denied its rightful position as the “tourism heaven” of the world.. Colombia, what with its Pacific and Atlantic Coastlines, is one of the most sundry countries to visit. Colombia, the land of lush rain forests of Amazon, the magnificent archaeological sites, the peaceful colonial towns, the buzzing night life of the major metropolitan cities and of the 44,000,000 warm hearted people whose sole mantra is “Passion”.

Colombia is named in the honor of Christopher Columbus, based on the Italian version of his name , Cristoforo Colombo. With Panama at its north, Colombia is bordered by Venezuela in the east, Brazil neighbors it in the southeast, and Ecuador and Peru are in the south west. Colombia is the only South American country to have a coastline that borders the Atlantic as well the Pacific. From the migrating hunchbacked whales passing along its Pacific coast to the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea harboring a myriad of corals, Colombia harbors the most diversified marine life.

With a country possessing as varied a terrain as Colombia, the weather is bound to the diverse.

Being a tropical country, Colombia is expected to have the same weather conditions all over the country. However, Colombia surprises here as well. From the Atlantic Coastline, which is hot and humid with temperatures in the range of 30 degrees Celsius, to the varied altitudes of the cities in the Andean mountains which accounts for their varied climates? Cali, being at 1000 meters , has a warm climate . Medellin, the “City of Eternal Spring”, with its all year spring like conditions lies at 1500 meters. Whereas the Capital Bogota enjoys a much cooler climate at 2600 meters. The Eastern plains of Colombia are dry and hot and are supplied by the rain in the Andeas. The Amazon in the South is , surprise!sSurprise! , hot, wet and humid.

Getting Around

Colombia’s beauty is not to be “toured” but to be “traveled” to be appreciated. Moving around in Colombia can be done at your own pace. If you are the fast and the furious type, you can use the domestic airlines like Avianca, COPA Colombia, Aires and EasyFly. For the landscape lover, there is a well paved network of roads that connect all the major cities. However, the rainy season, which normally lasts from November to February, brings with it, the hazard of landsliding. For those who are low on budget, there is a sprawling bus system. Getting around in cities like Bogota and Cali is easy enough due to the abundantly available taxis. The taxi service can be pre-ordered or it could be readily available on the go.

Best Time to Travel

The best time to travel to Colombia is between December to March and July to August. The Colombian spirit comes alive with a host of festivities and carnivals in this season. From the “Rock al Parque” in Bogota to Medellin, in the South, with its “Eternal Springtime”, to doing the Salsa in Cali ,the “Salsa Capital of South America”, Colombia leaves its charm on you.
