Overview

Tahiti is French Polynesia’s largest island. It comes under windward group. It is situated in the southern part of Pacific Ocean. It is French Polynesia’s political, cultural and economical centre. This island was created with high volcanic activities and mountainous coral reefs. The population of this city is around 178,133. It was formerly called with the name Otaheite.

Papeete is the capital of Tahiti and is situated in the west coast of only internationsl airport Faa. This airport is situated about 5 km from city center. History states Tahiti was under the governance of Polynesians in AD 800. 70 percent of the city population is comprises of Plynesians with rest of from china and other European countries. It was reported that Tahiti Island was declared as Colony of France in the year 1880. The interesting part is all the Tahitians are formerly called as French citizens. French is the official language spoken in Tahiti. This island was situated about 4400 km from Hawaii and 7900 Km from Chile. This island covers an area of 1045 km. Mount Orohena is the highest peak with an height of 2241km. it is roughly surrounded by two portions of volcanic eruptions. The city is named after the town Taravao.

Climate / Weather

The city undergoes warm weather conditions and climate is tropical. The winter season is from November to April. January is the wettest month and august is driest month. The average rain fall is 335mm. the average temperature of Tahiti is 210C with 160C being the lowest and 340C being the highest. The summer season is from November to April. If you come out of the plane don’t forget to get the cotton clothes. Most of the resorts and hotels here are cooled by fans during hot summers.

Transportation

Being island is the greatest advantage for Tahiti. The common transportation facility is provided through le Truck, an open air bus. This bus consists of wooden passenger cabins and offer the comfortness required by the commuters. Ticket price is inexpensive and is about 2 dollars. Private cars and scooters are other means of transportation. You can rent a car for $90 a day. You can also rent bikes to travel around the city. Boat is the best media to travel other island near to Tahiti. Cargo boats and schooners are common in Papette. Most of the ships does seven day trip to nearby islands at a limited budget.
